But we also know you want to look fierce. So, we talked to two industry experts to give us the inside scoop on the hottest 2020 summer fashion trends you’ll be rocking this year!

So pour yourself a frosty quarantini, turn up the music and let’s dive into the latest and greatest summer fashion trends, complete with insights from Madison Kay Cerullo, Owner/Designer - EastnWest Label and Sarah Williamson, Wholesale Director for Show Me Your MuMu!

Summer 2020 — When Festival Fashion and Streetwear Merge

This summer, we’re seeing so much festival-wear influence on both the runways and the city streets, we think you trendy babes are setting the style pace. So that’s where we started our conversation.

We asked about general 2020 summer fashion trends they’re enjoying, and Madison Kay Cerullo answered, “Definitely western — chain belts, cowboy boots and hats...the whole shebang.” Sarah Williamson emphasized colors, patterns and footwear. “We’ll be seeing a lot of “whites, neutrals and snake prints”, Williamson tells us. Look for great “cowboy boots, Doc Martens and platform sneakers worn with overalls and sets” adds Williamson.

Then, we got more specific...

Bravo for Bra Tops

Bra tops and sexy bralettes are shouldering aside crop tops as the hottest summer style to wear with shorts, skirts or skinny jeans. Many fun bra tops and bralettes are paired with matching bottoms. These sensational two-piece sets seem directly inspired by the rhinestone-studded and fringe-dripping styles trendy babes like you rock at desert festivals. Ready for styles you can wear for brunch and running errands? Look for lace embellished styles to wear alone or under a sheer top that adds a romantic appeal. While it’s difficult to choose a single color for the whole season, Cerullo is loving “pink, and as always, neutral tones!”

Sheer Magic!

We’ll also be seeing sheer dresses, skirts, tops, and even pants everywhere but work this summer. From netting to lace to mesh as well as sheer chiffons and silks, everyday wear is getting a lingerie-inspired makeover. We all love the look of a sexy bra top peeking through a sheer top. But summer will see many unexpected combos with sheer fabrics overlaying denim or even leather. Consider adding a sheer maxi dress over a pair of cutoff jeans and a cute tank top. You can layer sheer pieces over everything from bodysuits to jeans to rock this look.

Skirts? Sleek and Short

When has a cute mini skirt not been in style for summer? Gone are the ruffles and flounces of yester-year. For summer 2020, mini skirts have a sleek, and edgy look with clean lines, a slim fit and sexy slits. Look for plenty of denim and leather, especially with animal prints. Madison Kay Cerullo tells us “monochromatic colorways and color blocking is really big right now.” She says to expect “metallic hues, statement pieces with statement prints and textures like sequins and snakeskin”.

Killer Cut Outs

Play peekaboo this summer with chic and sexy slashes and cut outs in everything from swimsuits to dresses, tops and jumpsuits. Show a glimpse of cut abs or a well-toned back, ribs, sides and more. Add intrigue to your look with the complex style lines created by these sleek slices.

Bananas for Bandanas

Bandanas are having their moment in the sun, and festival fashion is showing the way to make them look fierce. Whether worn tied around your neck or hat as an accessory or around your chest as a top, fun, colorful styles are the way to go. Tie up your hair with a bandana like a headscarf or around your wrist like a bracelet. The possibilities are endless. Add drama to your look when you use a chain-fringe embellished bandana tied as a face mask.

Fabulous Fringe!

More than any other trend, the focus on fabulous fringe for summer seems taken directly from festival wear. This summer, you’ll find shorts, skirts, jeans, tops, boots, jackets and bandanas shimmying and swaying with fringe. This year, fringe has gone super long and lush, rather than short and flirty. For a quick and easy fashion update, wrap a fringed belt around your waist and strut into summer 2020.

Cozy Comfort is Here to Stay

Even as #StayHome gives way to cautious reopening, 2020 has been a tough year that shows no sign of mellowing. Consequently, cozy clothing that’s stylish but comforting is a big trend the fashion world is embracing. From extra-plush, oversized jumpers to super-soft joggers, oversized vintage band tees & flannels, and repurposed vintage face masks, be sure to get a slice of #ComfyStyle and #UnitedWeChill.

Badass Boho

Are you sensing a trend here? Many of the hottest trends for summer 2020 add up to a bohemian take on chic. Cerullo describes herself as “obsessed” with the boho trend that is soaring and she’s putting a rock ‘n roll twist on it. Cerullo says “we design more bohemian and western pieces and generally keep it more neutral. These look so epic photographed!” We asked her about fabrics, and were excited to hear, “I think sequins are always trending but especially more intricate sequin with patterns in it. Also sheer fabrics with embellishments!” Awesome!

Festival Fashion Guide

So we just had to learn more about the inspiration and process behind the fashion, and both Cerullo and Williamson were happy to dish about coming styles and trend-setters that inspire them.

With so much festival fashion influence in summer fashion this year, where should trendy babes get started?

Cerullo answered, “We want our girls to stand out and look their best, so we definitely make statement pieces and things that feel special. For us, our top trends are always pieces with fringe or embellishment details. The more over-the-top the better, but in a tasteful way.” Williamson recommends “cute sets, overalls, mini dresses and denim shorts”.

What to Wear for a Day at the Beach?

Remember to stay safe. If the beach is open, Williamson recommends “Swimsuit under overalls, one-piece with a fun cover-up, one-piece as a bodysuit with jean shorts!” Cerullo agrees, “I would wear one of our sets or one of our bathing suits paired with a light coverup that I could tie around my waist or throw in my bag! Keep it light and airy.”

How Do You Plan a Killer Outfit for a Long, Busy Summer Day?

Both Cerullo and Williamson recommend emphasizing comfort as well as style for fun summer wear, so you’ll enjoy the day as well as look smokin’ hot. Cerullo recommends you “pick your key pieces you are most excited about wearing and then add to that. Don't forget to accessorize but keep it fairly comfortable.” She’s a big fan of versatility, encouraging us to “make sure you have an overlayer of some sort, a small bag and comfy shoes!” Williamson says “plan an outfit based on the weather!” For the hot months of summer, “make sure to plan to dress light, and with pieces that are able to be taken off but still give you a full FIT!”

Who are the Trend-Setters Who Most Inspire You?

Cerullo looks to fashion models Gigi Hadid and Hailey Baldwin for inspiration. She loves the personal style of international supermodels Elsa Hosk and Romee Strijd and follows fashion blogger Negin Mirsalehi. Williamson is excited about fashion blogger-turned-model Jamie Kidd, lifestyle blogger Ashley Cassidy and Halley Elefante. “Even though Ashley isn't our go-to festival chick, she rocks everything and anything ALWAYS!“

Which Music Festivals are You Looking Forward To?

(This may be an unfair question, but we know you trendy babes wanted to know. There’s nothing we won’t do for you!) Williamson says she’s looking forward to dancing at Coachella and Stagecoach. For Cerullo? “The next one!”

We couldn’t agree more!
